Golden Horns Explained and How to Spend Them: Starter Kits, Runes, Equipment Recipes

Spend Your Golden Horns Wisely!

The biggest mistake new players make is using golden horns to buy cosmetics at the start of their ToM careers.

Use them on starter kits, runes, and weapon and armor recipes in the shop instead. Those have the biggest impact on your progression.

Starter Kits

Most of the starter kits in the shop aren’t very good. There are two that you should make a note of in the beginning though.

The Feral Starter Kit which includes a Feral Hammer and a Nothing to Hide rune, which gives you an increase of 150 damage when you aren’t wearing armor.

It can be a little tough to stay alive without armor, but if you can dodge roll well you can clear out mobs really easily because of the attack power increase.

Keep in mind that you can have a shield equipped and the rune will still work. So you can block if you need to.

The other is the Harvester Starter Kit. It comes with the gathering tools you need to mine iron, stone, and wood. It’s a bit of a time save, but the real reason you get is is that you start with the Lucky Loot rune.

This rune gives you a 20% chance to get double the loot from creatures.

After your first game, you’ll get a Villager Starter Kit for free. So you’ll have to choose which one to use, since you can’t equip more than one at a time. Personally I use the Villager Starter Kit more often than the other two I listed.

The other starter kits just don’t make sense to me, but it’s worth looking into to keep the game interesting.

Shop Runes

Runes that you unlock in the shop become available as drops in your next game. No, you don’t start with them in your inventory, unfortunately. Instead they have a chance to drop when you defeat enemies.

On the bright side, once they’re unlocked, they’re unlocked forever. So you’ll always have a chance of finding them.

But keep in mind that some of the runes in the shop aren’t very useful. Only buy the ones that you want to see, or you may end up with a bunch of useless runes.

Weapon and Armor Recipes

Weapon and armor recipes allow the NPCs in Midgard to craft the items that you unlock.

Like the runes, you don’t start with the items in your inventory. You’ll need to gather materials and craft them with their respective villager.

I recommend getting the Raider Axe III recipe, since it’s cheap to craft and does decent damage for an early game item.

Spending Golden Horns in Midgard

Some items in Midgard require Golden Horns in order to craft them. I wouldn’t recommend doing this until you’ve already purchased what you need from the shop.

You don’t necessarily need Legendary weapons to kill Fenrir. Maybe the other ancients, but it sure makes it easier.

Ultimately it’s your choice on how to spend your horns, but choosing wisely will make your progression faster.

Pro tip: you can spend golden horns on the alter in the hut on the north side of the village to buy runes!
